Auburn University has officially renamed a laboratory in the Shelby Center within the College of Engineering to the NaphCare Charitable Foundation Laboratory. Dr. Rita J. Armitage, President of the NCF along with Jim McLane, NaphCare’s Chairman of the Board, and other research consultants from NaphCare toured the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering lab facilities on Friday, April 29th, with Dr. Ahn Nguyen, Ph. D. Assistant Professor at Auburn University and four of his PhD students. There, Dr. Chris Roberts, dean of the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering and soon-to-be president of Auburn University, presented the Foundation attendees with a plaque and certificate recognizing that “the NaphCare Foundation has established themselves as a significant contributor to Auburn University.” Dr. Roberts went on to commemorate the NCF’s dedication through our ongoing partnership, generous financial contributions and support of Auburn University’s state-of-the-art research on artificial intelligence.

Dr. Nguyen’s lab at Auburn “is completely focused on deep learning. We seek to understand and improve the learning principles of machines and humans.” (https://anhnguyen.me/lab/)

Technological advancements in AI, and specifically facial recognition, are a trending area of research as more academic researchers and technology companies strive to remove racial and gender bias to improve AI models and make them more equitable. Through this important research, NaphCare hopes to aid mental health clinicians in the correctional health industry identify traits in individuals that point to mental health problems and thereby treat such problems accurately and without bias.
