As a private foundation and the philanthropic arm of NaphCare, Inc., we are proud to support groundbreaking initiatives in correctional healthcare. The focus is on redefining the future of healthcare for justice-involved individuals, ensuring they receive the support and care necessary to reintegrate into society successfully.
Founded in 2011, the NaphCare Charitable Foundation is steadfast in its dedication to enhancing community safety and well-being. Our work revolves around innovative research and accessible education to serve justice-involved individuals and support high school graduates aspiring to make a difference.
We are committed to creating a model of health equity, having awarded over $3 million in scholarships to foster a brighter, more equitable future.

A Look into our History

2011

NaphCare Charitable Foundation founded

The NaphCare Charitable Foundation was founded by James S. McLane and inspired by the Valley High School Class of '61. NCF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to charitable, educational, and philanthropic purposes and awarded its first scholarship to a Valley High School student.

2013

Tommy Ward Memorial Scholarship Fund is established

The Tommy Ward Memorial Scholarship Fund was established which honors a beloved Vestavia Hills High School coach who was killed in a tragic accident.

2019

Aldridge Gardens Educational Building Funded

NCF funded the multi-use educational building at Aldridge Gardens in Hoover, Alabama. The building will be used for hands-on instructional classes in horticulture for children and adults.

Auburn University Renames Engineering Lab in Honor of NCF

NCF's research proposal, "Towards Accurate, Fair, and Explainable Facial Recognition Systems," led to the naming of a laboratory in the Shelby Center within the College of Engineering at Auburn University in their honor.

NCF Gift to Support Auburn University College of Engineering

NFC pledged $453,000 to Auburn University to enhance facilities and support ongoing research in the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, specifically funding new lab equipment for Associate Professor Anh Nguyen's AI bias research. This supports efforts to reduce bias in AI, particularly in facial recognition technology.

NCF acquired Foundant Technologies' Scholarship Lifecycle Manager software.

Mission Statement Revised

The mission of the NCF was revised to continue to provide scholarship opportunities, but also focus on scientific research and educational programs. In addition, the team was expanded to include additional members to assist with NCF's revised mission.
